Where to find the reference number

At most brands the reference number sits between the lugs, on the twelve o'clock side and under the bracelet. It fixes exactly which version it is, and that says more about a watch than the model name alone.

Each watch in our collection exists once. If something in these details is not right, do let us know.

The Rolex GMT-Master II with the black and blue bezel, known to collectors as the Batman, is a travel watch that shows two time zones at once. This example carries reference 116710BLNR and was made in 2013.

What this watch does

Besides the regular time, an extra hand, the blue one with the triangular tip, shows a second time zone. That hand takes twenty-four hours to go round, and on the rotating bezel with its 24-hour scale you read what hour it is there. The regular hour hand can be set in one-hour steps without the minutes moving.

The bezel

The bezel is made of Cerachrom, the ceramic Rolex developed itself. The colour sits in the material rather than on it, so it does not fade in the sun and barely scratches. This reference was the first for which Rolex managed that in two colours.

Practical

The steel case measures 40 mm and is water-resistant to 100 metres. Calibre 3186 has a power reserve of approximately 48 hours. The watch sits on a steel Oyster bracelet with a folding clasp. Box and papers are included.

Questions and answers

Questions about this watch

Why is this version called Batman?

After the black and blue bezel, whose colours reminded collectors of the comic-book hero. The nickname comes from enthusiasts, not from Rolex itself, which simply calls the watch the GMT-Master II.

What is the difference from the newer 126710BLNR?

The 116710BLNR from 2013 has calibre 3186 and sits on an Oyster bracelet. Its successor from 2019, the 126710BLNR, received calibre 3285 with a longer power reserve and first appeared on a Jubilee bracelet only. The 40 mm case and the bezel have stayed practically the same.

Can I set the second time zone on this GMT-Master II myself?

Yes. With calibre 3186 you move the regular hour hand forwards or backwards in one-hour steps, without the minute hand moving. The 24-hour hand keeps showing home time, so after a time-zone change the watch is right again in a single step.

Can I swim with this GMT-Master II?

The watch is water-resistant to 100 metres, so swimming and showering are fine. Whether a particular watch still meets that rating depends on the condition of its gaskets; have it tested if you want to take it into the water.

How does a 40 mm case wear on an Oyster bracelet?

Forty millimetres is the classic size for a sports watch and suits most wrists. The Oyster bracelet with its three broad links gives the watch a solid, sporty character. If in doubt, come and try it on in Utrecht first.

How often does a GMT-Master II need servicing?

Rolex recommends a service roughly every ten years, depending on how the watch is used. If it runs noticeably fast or slow, or moisture appears under the crystal, have it checked sooner.
