What a Patek Philippe Nautilus is worth depends on the reference, on the metal and on whether the certificate of origin is included. At this brand that paper matters unusually much: it records which watch, with which case number, was sold when. The state of the case and the stretch in the bracelet count too. We assess your watch on its own and you receive an offer without obligation within 24 hours, weekends included.
The Nautilus was designed in 1976 as a sporty steel watch from a house that until then had mainly made slim, classic ones. The shape comes from a porthole: a rounded octagon with a hinge on either side, with a dial full of horizontal grooves and a bracelet that flows into the case. Those three features are still the starting point of every assessment.
Which reference is on the certificate, and does the case number match it? Is the case steel, white, yellow or rose gold? And how crisp is the transition between the polished chamfer and the brushed top surface? On this case that last point is where wear and polishing show up soonest.
If you no longer have the certificate, we still buy the watch; there is no minimum value and nothing is turned down in advance. But at Patek Philippe that paper makes more difference than at other brands, so it is worth a quick search before you send a request.
Within this single model, versions with time and date only run alongside chronographs and moon phases. Below are the six that reach us most, with the number alongside so you can find it on your certificate.
Forty millimetres, time and date only, with a ribbed dial in blue-black, blue or white. The reference most people think of.
The first Nautilus, forty-two millimetres and so unusually large for its time. A slim automatic movement and a two-part case.
The same case but with small seconds, a power reserve and a moon phase. An asymmetric dial that not everyone likes, and that for exactly that reason has an audience of its own.
A chronograph with a single window in which the elapsed hours and minutes are read together. A slightly thicker case, the same visual language.
A chronograph and a second time zone in one watch, with two pushers on the left to move the home time.
Forty-one millimetres in white gold, with a revised bracelet and clasp. The version that entered the catalogue after the 5711.
At Patek Philippe a suffix follows the number, such as 1A for steel on a steel bracelet. If you do not know it, that is no obstacle: it is on the certificate, and otherwise we work it out from the photos.
Unlike at many other brands, the number is not between the lugs but on the certificate of origin, and the case number is engraved on the case. Those two should match, and at this brand that is the first thing a buyer will want to see.

Not finding your reference here? We also buy the ladies' versions, the perpetual calendars and the early series from the seventies and eighties.
The figures below apply to the modern references with time and date. On the chronographs and the calendar versions the case is thicker and there is more on the dial; that is noted line by line.
Use this table to work out which Nautilus you have. An offer does not follow from it: we make that on the individual watch, with the certificate and the watch side by side.
You do not have to be an expert to see what condition your Nautilus is in. Go through these four points in daylight with the watch in hand.
Look at the two protruding parts on either side of the case that hold it shut. There should be a taut, polished edge there that meets the brushed top surface crisply. If that edge has gone rounded and the polished surface bleeds into the brushed one, material has been taken away. On this case shape that cannot be put right.
Tilt the dial slowly under a lamp and see whether the grooves are equally deep and equally regular throughout. Note too where the text sits: on an original dial it runs neatly between the grooves. Stains, applied markers sitting crooked or a groove that breaks off are all reasons to look more closely.
Find the engraved case number on the case and set it beside the number on the certificate of origin. At this brand that is the most important check you can do yourself, because it is where the trade starts too. If the numbers and the reference match, you have answered most of the questions in advance.
Lift the watch by the clasp and see how far the links towards the middle of the bracelet sag apart. On a bracelet that flows into the case, loose links cannot simply be bought, so stretch counts for more here than on an ordinary bracelet. Check too whether the clasp still clicks firmly shut.
If you cannot capture all of this, there is no need. Send what you can manage and keep the certificate to hand; we go through the rest with you.
Have your Nautilus assessedTwo examples of the same reference can sit far apart, and at this brand the paperwork plays a larger part in that than usual. Below are the points that count, from heaviest to lightest.
A 5711 in steel, a 5712 with moon phase, a 5980 as a chronograph or a 5811 in white gold are four different watches. This is the first question and immediately the weightiest.
Impact on the value: Large
It carries the reference, the case number and the date of sale. At Patek Philippe that paper counts for more than at other brands, because it makes the whole history of the watch traceable.
Impact on the value: Large
The transition between the polished chamfer and the brushed top surface should be crisp. On this case shape, material buffed away shows at once, and it does not come back.
Impact on the value: Large
Blue, blue-black, white or olive green, and on a few editions with a different name on the dial. Within the same reference that can make a noticeable difference.
Impact on the value: Average
Stretch in the links counts for more here than on an ordinary bracelet, because links for an integrated bracelet cannot be sourced separately. We also look at whether the clasp still closes properly.
Impact on the value: Average
A service at Patek Philippe itself with the receipt to match is a plus. If a second caseback or an extra strap was supplied, do say so, because those pieces often go missing.
Impact on the value: Average
You will not find figures or guide prices here. With these references the market moves too fast to pin a number to a web page, and you are better served by an offer on your own watch.
Request a valuation
On a Nautilus the certificate and the caseback should carry the same number.
These three have the same case and yet a very different audience, because what is on the dial changes what the watch reads as. Below they stand side by side.
| Nautilus 5711 | Nautilus 5712 | Nautilus 5980 | |
|---|---|---|---|
| On the dial | Time and date | Small seconds, power reserve, moon phase | Chronograph with one window |
| Period | 2006 to 2021 | 2006 to 2025 | from 2006 |
| Case size | 40 mm | just over 40 mm | just over 40 mm, thicker |
| Pushers | None | None | Two, beside the crown |
| Dial | Symmetrical | Asymmetric | With one counter |
| How often we see it | The most common of the three | Regularly | Noticeably less often |
Not sure which you have? Look at how much is happening on the dial. Only a date at three points to the 5711, small seconds with a moon phase to the 5712, and two pushers beside the crown to a chronograph.
Four things that on this model make the difference between a quick sale and a long story. No predictions about the market, only what we see come past.
At most brands a warranty card is welcome but not decisive. At Patek Philippe the certificate of origin is the document with which a buyer checks that reference, case number and date of sale belong together. If it is missing we still buy, but look hard for it first.
The shape of this case consists of surfaces meeting in a crisp line: polished next to brushed. A well-meant refresh at a jeweller takes that line off and makes the case softer and rounder. That is exactly what a connoisseur looks at, so do not have it worked on before you sell.
When the steel version with time and date ended in 2021, and later the moon phase as well, the way the market looks at those numbers changed with it. We make no predictions about that. It is worth knowing, though, that for this reason the year on your certificate says more at this brand than it usually would.
Both are sporty, both have an octagonal case and a pronounced pattern on the dial. The difference: the Nautilus has baton markers, horizontal grooves and two hinges on the side; the Aquanaut has applied numerals and a chequered pattern. Put the right name in your request, because they are two markets.
If you do not know where your watch fits in here, put it to us. The offer carries no obligation, and we handle everything discreetly: there is no advert and no strangers at your door.

A selection of three of the 50 Google reviews, quoted word for word.
We buy every Patek Philippe Nautilus, from a 3700 from the seventies to a 5811 in white gold. For each reference we look at the metal, at the certificate and the numbers, and at the state of the case edges and the bracelet. Keep the certificate to hand, because with it the conversation is about the watch and not about the doubt.
The 5711 is the steel Nautilus with time and date only, made from 2006 to 2021, in forty millimetres and with a ribbed dial. If you want to sell a Patek Philippe 5711, the first things we ask for are the colour of the dial and the certificate, because the blue-black, the blue and the white each have their own audience.
The 3700 is the first Nautilus, from 1976, forty-two millimetres and unusually large for its time, which is why the trade calls it the Jumbo. To sell a Nautilus 3700 we assess the individual watch: on this reference the dials and cases differ from series to series, and a wrong assumption is easily made.
The 5712 has small seconds, a power reserve and a moon phase, which makes the dial asymmetric. It ran from 2006 to 2025. When selling a Nautilus 5712 we check that all the indications set and run correctly, because a moon phase that is out is a reason to have the movement looked at.
The 5980 is the Nautilus chronograph, with a single window in which the elapsed hours and minutes are read together. There have been versions in steel and in rose gold. If you want to sell a Patek Philippe Nautilus 5980, we check that the chronograph starts, stops and resets to zero cleanly.
The 5990 combines a chronograph with a second time zone and has two pushers on the left of the case for it. To sell a Nautilus 5990 we look at those pushers and at whether the home time springs back properly. We also buy the versions in gold.
The 5811 is the version that entered the catalogue after the 5711: forty-one millimetres in white gold, with a revised bracelet and a different clasp. When selling a Nautilus 5811 the certificate and how complete the set is are the first things we need, because this is a recent reference.
There are Nautilus versions of around thirty-five millimetres, with an automatic movement or with quartz, and sometimes with brilliants on the bezel. If you want to sell a ladies' Patek Philippe Nautilus, do say whether it has stones and whether the certificate is still with it. We buy them in steel and in gold.
Besides the time, the 5726 shows the day, the date, the month and a moon phase, and needs adjusting only once a year. To sell such a version we check that all the windows change over properly. If you have the receipts from a service, do send them along.
That depends on the reference, on the metal, on the state of the case edges and on whether the certificate of origin is included. A 5711 in steel and a 5980 in rose gold sit in different markets.
We do not name figures here, because on these references a guide price would sooner mislead you. Send a few photos and the certificate, and you will hear what we offer within 24 hours.
At this brand it matters more than at most others. That certificate carries the reference, the case number and the date of sale, which makes the watch traceable.
If you no longer have it, we still buy the watch. Do look hard for it, though, because on a Nautilus it makes more difference than on another watch.
It is engraved on the case and not between the lugs as at some other brands. On the caseback or on the side, depending on the reference.
Set that number beside the number on the certificate. If they match, you have answered most of a buyer's questions in advance.
Look at the dial. The Nautilus has horizontal grooves and applied batons as hour markers. The Aquanaut has a chequered pattern and applied Arabic numerals.
Then look at the side: the Nautilus has two protruding hinges at three and nine o'clock. The Aquanaut does not.
Yes, we simply buy it and tell you what we see.
On this case shape it does show, because the surfaces meet in a crisp line and that disappears under polishing. So do not have it worked on before you sell; that takes value off rather than adding it.
No. We buy the watch ourselves and handle the onward sale without involving your details.
There is no advert that can be traced back to you and no strangers at your door. At this price level that is, for many people, the reason to sell to a dealer rather than advertise it themselves.
That is fine. Any brand, any condition, and we set no lower limit.
The box counts, and a service receipt from Patek Philippe or from a good workshop fills in the picture further. Do also say whether a second caseback or an extra strap belongs with it.
Usually the same day and in any case within 24 hours, Saturdays and Sundays included.
After that you decide. You may set the offer alongside others and turn it down; the watch simply stays yours.

With a watch in this class, Beni Reuben starts with the paperwork and not with the watch. On a Nautilus that means the certificate beside the caseback, and then the edges of the case, because on this shape that is where you can see whether it has ever been polished.
