What is my watch worth?

What your watch is worth depends on the brand, the reference, the condition and what comes with it. We assess your watch on its own and you hear within 24 hours what we offer for it, weekends included. You are committed to nothing.

What do you get for your watch?

You hear that within 24 hours, once we have assessed your watch. We publish no figures in advance, and there is a reason for that. The estimates you find online are based on adverts, and such a figure is an asking price and not a return: it is what somebody hopes to get, not what was paid. Between the two sit the time a watch spends on sale, the negotiation and the risk. We assess your watch and make an offer you can accept or turn down.

The question "what is my watch worth" really has three answers, and which one you need depends on what you want to do with the watch.

Three kinds of value

The asking price is what appears in adverts. The return on selling to a dealer is what reaches your account today, without your having to advertise, negotiate and ship. And the replacement value is what it costs to buy the same watch again; that is for insurance and is usually higher than the other two. This page is about the second.

What we need in order to say

The brand and the model, and the reference number if you know it. Beyond that, a few photos of the dial, the case and whatever comes with it. If you do not know the reference, that is no obstacle: we read it from the photos ourselves or ask where it sits on your model.

Box and papers not required

We buy every brand, with or without box and papers and even when the watch has stopped. There is no minimum value, so you can always send a request.

How it works

From question to offer in four steps

You do not have to work anything out or know anything. What you send is enough to begin with; we ask for the rest.

  1. Send a few photos

The dial straight from above, the case from the side and whatever else comes with it. Daylight and no flash is enough; a phone will do.

  2. We place the watch

We establish the reference, the generation and the condition. If something we need is missing, we ask for it rather than make an assumption.

  3. An offer within 24 hours

Every day of the week, weekends included. The offer carries no obligation: you can set it beside an advert or another offer.

  4. You decide

If you accept, we arrange to meet in Utrecht or you send the watch insured at our expense. If you turn it down, you keep your watch.

Valuation

What sets the value of a watch?

These six points count at almost every brand, in this order. They explain why two watches that look alike in a photo can sit far apart.

  • Brand and reference

The brand sets the range, the reference number decides where within it you sit. On many models one digit in that number matters more than ten years of age.

    Impact on the value: Large

  • The state of the case

Crisp edges and a clean transition between the surfaces count heavily. A case that has been polished often loses those lines, and they do not come back.

    Impact on the value: Large

  • Does it work and has it been serviced

Does the watch run, do the functions switch, has it been serviced. A receipt from a good workshop is a plus; a stopped watch is no rejection.

    Impact on the value: Large

  • Original parts

Are the dial, the hands and the bezel still the originals. At service those used often to be replaced, and on older watches that counts.

    Impact on the value: Average

  • Box, papers and accessories

Papers make the year and the version traceable. Loose links, a second strap and service receipts all count, and sit in a drawer more often than people think.

    Impact on the value: Average

  • Where the demand sits now

At any given moment some models are in more demand than others. That moves, which is why an offer from last year is no measure for today.

    Impact on the value: Average

We deliberately name no figures and no guide prices on this page. Every watch is assessed on its own, and a number that fits every brand would almost certainly miss reality on yours.

Side by side

A valuation, a valuation report or a calculator?

Searching for the value of a watch brings you to three different things. Each gives a different answer, and that is not a contradiction but a difference in purpose.

A dealer's offer Valuation report Calculator on listing sites
What it answersWhat you get today What replacement costs What sellers ask
Who does itA dealer or valuer A sworn valuer A computer
Looks at your individual watchYes, by photo or in person Yes, usually in person No, only at the model

If you want to know what you get for your watch today, you need the first column. If you want a figure for your insurer or an estate, the second.

Asking price or proceeds

A figure on the internet is an asking price and not a return. We explain that difference before we make an offer.

Good to know

Four things that affect the outcome

No predictions about the market, but what we see people do that either short-changes them or helps them.

  • Do not polish it before you sell

This is the mistake that costs the most money. A well-meant polish at a jeweller takes the crisp edges off the case and they do not come back. What a buyer wants to see is a watch that has been left alone, not a watch that shines. Leave it as it is and let us look.

  • Search the drawer first

Papers, the warranty card, loose links, a second strap, service receipts, the little tool. All those pieces count and they are still lying about more often than people think. A complete watch of ten years old can do better than a bare one of five.

  • A faulty watch is not a written-off watch

We also buy what has stopped, what no longer runs properly or has lost a crystal. There is no minimum value. What you should not do is have it opened by somebody without experience of the brand; that usually makes the outcome worse rather than better.

  • Give the reference if you have it

At most brands there is a number on the case or on the papers that fixes the version exactly. With that number to hand an offer is sharper and quicker, because we have to make fewer assumptions. If you do not know it, we look it up.

If you are unsure where your watch fits in this picture, put it to us. The offer ties you to nothing and you decide only once you have seen it.

By brand

What is my watch worth, brand by brand

Each brand has its own page setting out what decides the value, with the references we see most. If your brand is not listed, we buy it just the same.

By type of watch

What is your watch worth?

We assess every watch on its own, from a modern steel sports chronograph to a gold watch from the sixties. Below, each situation sets out what we look at. And if we are not the right people, we say so too.

What is my Rolex worth?

On a Rolex the answer starts with the reference number between the lugs. That number fixes the generation, the material and the type of bezel, and with it most of the range. Then we look at how crisp the case is and at whether box and papers are still there. It is set out model by model on the Rolex page.

What is my Omega worth?

At Omega the movement decides the outcome more often than the exterior. Two Speedmasters that look identical can have a different calibre and a different crystal. At this brand the reference is not on the case but on the warranty document. See the Omega page.

What is a pre-owned watch worth?

A worn watch is not a written-off watch. At most luxury brands the condition decides the outcome more than the age: a well-kept example of fifteen years old can do better than a neglected one of five. Signs of wear are normal and no reason not to ask.

What is a vintage watch worth?

On watches from before about 1990 it comes down to whether everything belongs together: the dial, the hands, the case and the movement. A replaced dial changes the outcome, even if it makes the watch look better. So above all leave a vintage watch as it is and have it looked at by somebody who knows the brand.

What is my watch worth without papers?

We buy without box and without warranty card as well, and there is no minimum value. Papers do make the year and the version traceable, and at some brands that matters more than at others. So they are worth looking for, but not a condition for starting.

What is a gold watch worth?

On a watch in precious metal the weight of the gold counts, but rarely as the main point. A gold watch from a well-known brand is almost always worth more as a watch than as material. So never hand a gold watch over to a party that only weighs, without anyone having looked at the brand and the movement.

What is my watch worth if it has stopped?

We also buy what no longer runs. A watch that has lain in a drawer for years almost certainly has dry oil and sometimes dry gaskets; in a valuation that is a given and not a deal breaker. Mention it in your request and we know what to watch for. We advise against opening it yourself.

What is my watch worth for insurance?

That is a different figure from what we offer, because insurance is about what replacement costs and not about what you get today. For that you need a valuation report from a sworn valuer. We do not write those reports; we make an offer to buy. The difference is explained on having a watch valued.

Frequently asked questions

Questions about the value of a watch

What is my watch worth?

That depends on the brand, the reference, the condition and what comes with it. We assess your watch on its own and you hear what we offer within 24 hours.

We name no figure in advance on this page. A number that fits every brand and every version would almost certainly miss reality on your watch.

Why is there no price list on this site?

Because within the same model there is too much variation. Two examples with the same number can sit far apart because of the state of the case, the originality of the dial and what comes with it.

A list would therefore come out too high for one and too low for another, and that helps nobody. We would rather look at your watch.

Why is the offer lower than what I see online?

What you see online is usually asking prices: what a seller hopes to get. An offer is what you receive today, without having to advertise, negotiate, ship and carry the risk yourself.

Between the two also sits the time a watch spends on sale. If you want to take that time and that work on yourself, you can; our offer then stands alongside your own attempt.

Does a valuation cost anything?

Making an offer is free and without obligation: you receive it and then decide for yourself. There is no commitment and you are tied to nothing.

Note the difference from a valuation report for an insurer or an estate. That is a different product, with a figure on paper from a sworn valuer, and we do not write those.

Do you need the reference number?

It helps, because it fixes the version exactly. At most brands it is on the case or on the papers.

But it is not a condition. Send photos of the dial, the case and the back, and we read the version from those or ask where the number sits on your model.

Do you also buy watches from lesser-known brands?

Yes. We buy every brand and nothing is turned down in advance. There is no minimum value either.

On the well-known brands we can often make an offer sooner, simply because we see them daily. On a less common brand it may cost an extra question.

How soon do I know where I stand?

Within 24 hours of your request, every day of the week. Weekends included.

After that it is up to you. You may set the offer beside an advert or another offer and do nothing with it; the watch simply stays yours.

What happens to my details and photos?

We use them to assess your watch and to get in touch with you. We do not share them with anyone else.

If you sell the watch to us, we handle the rest without involving your details. There is no advert that can be traced back to you.
