A year's guarantee on the movement
If anything goes wrong with the running movement within a year, we put it right. Damage from drops, water or your own interventions is not covered.
The terms
A Swiss watch with a quiet look, and often somebody's first. Bought and checked by us, with a year's guarantee on the movement and fourteen days to change your mind.
Our stock consists of what we buy ourselves, so it changes. Tell us which Baume & Mercier you are looking for and in which version and we will keep it in mind as soon as one comes in. Below is what else to watch for on this brand.
At an entry-level brand the gap between new and pre-owned is relatively larger than at the brands that hold their value. You buy the same Swiss movement and the same finishing, but without the part of the price that disappears into the shop on a new watch. And with us you get the same guarantee on the movement as on any other brand.
Baume & Mercier has existed since the nineteenth century and makes watches that do not rely on standing out: flat cases, legible dials, leather or steel straps. For many people this is the first Swiss watch they own, and that makes the conversation different from a sports watch where the reference is the subject.
That is the first question here. A quartz watch runs on a battery, is slimmer and asks little; an automatic is wound by your movement and keeps running as long as you wear it. Neither is better, but it is a choice and not something you should discover only after buying. With us it is in the description.
Every watch we sell goes through the same checks: does it run well, is the case sound, how does the strap sit, what comes with it. There is no separate, less careful route for the cheaper watches.
On a watch worn daily the information sits in the small things. Whatever stands out there we put in the description.
This is in every description. On a quartz watch that has stood still for a long time we take the battery out until it is sold, because a battery that starts to leak does more damage than years of standing still. At the point of sale a fresh one is fitted.
On a flat case the crystal sits close to the edge, and that is where it takes the first knock in a fall. We look for chipped edges and for scratches running across the field, and add close-ups if there is anything.
On a leather strap we look at the leather at the lug end, where it flexes, and at whether the buckle is the original. On a bracelet we look for stretch and play in the clasp. If the strap has been replaced, that is stated.
Every watch we sell runs and has been checked, whatever it costs. If anything goes wrong with the movement within the year, we put it right. At this brand that is no different from the dearer ones.
If you want to see something more clearly than the photos show, ask for another shot. It is no trouble and it beats guessing.
Warranty and authenticity
A watch that costs less gets no less attention here. The same checks, the same photos of the watch itself, the same guarantee on the movement. Anyone buying a first Swiss watch deserves to know that as much as somebody buying a Rolex.
These three apply to every watch you buy from us, whatever the brand or the amount.
If anything goes wrong with the running movement within a year, we put it right. Damage from drops, water or your own interventions is not covered.
The termsIf you buy in the web shop, you have fourteen days from receipt to change your mind, no reason needed. Looking and trying on is fine, as long as it comes back undamaged.
ReturnsOn the Amsterdamsestraatweg in Utrecht. Wednesday and Thursday without an appointment, all other days by appointment.
Address and hoursThe lines of this brand at a glance. If you have a watch of your own to part with, of whatever brand, you can submit it through the general page.
The stock is built up from our own purchases and so changes. Below, each line sets out what to look at on a pre-owned example.
The Clifton is the round classic with a flat case and a calm dial, and the line the brand is best known for. It exists with quartz and with an automatic, and that difference is the first question on a pre-owned example. With us it is in the description.
The Classima is the slimmest and simplest line, usually on a leather strap, which makes it a watch that fits under a cuff. On a pre-owned Classima the leather at the lug end is the point to watch, because that is where a strap gives up first.
The Hampton has a rectangular case and comes in men's and ladies' sizes. On a rectangular case the figure on paper says little about how it sits on a wrist, so trying it on is more than a formality here.
The Riviera has a twelve-sided bezel and a bracelet that flows into the case. On such an integrated bracelet we look especially at the links and the clasp, because it cannot be replaced with one from another brand.
For many people this brand is the first Swiss watch they buy. The difference between quartz and an automatic is then the most useful question: quartz runs on a battery and is slimmer, an automatic is wound by your movement. Neither is better, but it is a choice.
Several lines exist in smaller sizes, with quartz or with an automatic, and sometimes with stones on the bezel. If a version with stones is included, we state what we can establish and no more than that.
We are at Amsterdamsestraatweg 251 in Utrecht. On Wednesday and Thursday you are welcome between 12:00 and 17:00 without an appointment; other days by appointment, weekends included. On a flat case, trying a watch on before you buy it is the best way to know whether it suits you.
We buy every brand, in any condition, and there is no minimum value. The page on selling a watch sets out how that works, and the brands page lists the brands we have a page of their own for.
For many people yes, and that is also why we buy this brand. It is Swiss made, it looks quiet and it does not read as something demanding attention.
What we will not do is tell you what to find beautiful. Come by, try a few on, and see which one stays on.
Neither. Quartz runs on a battery, is slimmer and asks little; an automatic is wound by your movement and keeps running as long as you wear it.
What does count is that you know before you buy, which is why it is in every description.
On a quartz watch we buy, we take the battery out until it is sold, because a battery that starts to leak does more damage than years of standing still.
At the point of sale a fresh one is fitted. If the watch does not then run as it should, that falls under the guarantee on the movement.
Yes. A year on the movement, whatever the watch costs.
We have no separate, shorter guarantee for the cheaper watches. See warranty and authenticity.
If we can establish it, it is stated, along with the state of the leather at the lug end and whether the buckle is the original.
On a watch worn for years a replaced strap is the rule rather than the exception, and that makes the watch no lesser.
Please do. We are at Amsterdamsestraatweg 251 in Utrecht. Wednesday and Thursday without an appointment between 12:00 and 17:00, all other days by appointment.
On a flat or rectangular case that is the only way to know whether it suits you.
If you buy in the web shop, you have fourteen days from receipt to change your mind, no reason needed.
How that works is set out on returns and cooling-off period.
Yes. We buy every brand, in any condition, with or without box and papers, and there is no minimum value.
See selling a watch for how that works.
Tell us which line you are looking for and whether you want quartz or an automatic. The stock is built up from our own purchases. Or come by in Utrecht and see what is here now, from the other brands too.
