What sets the value of your IWC?
IWC makes three kinds of watch that have little to do with one another: a large classic with the case of a marine chronometer, pilot's watches with an inner case against magnetism, and a sports watch drawn by Gérald Genta. Which of those three you have decides most of the answer. These are the six points that matter most.
-
Which line and which reference
A Portugieser Chronograph, a forty-six millimetre Big Pilot and an Ingenieur sit in three different markets. At IWC the reference begins with IW and is on the warranty card; on older watches it is a four-digit number such as 3714 or 5002.
Impact on the value: Large
-
An in-house or a bought-in movement
At IWC this is a sharp dividing line. The Portugieser Chronograph 3714 ran from 1998 to 2020 on a movement based on the Valjoux 7750; the 3716 that succeeded it in 2020 has the in-house calibre 69355. We buy both, but the market looks at them differently.
Impact on the value: Large
-
The material of the case
Steel, titanium, ceramic, bronze or gold. IWC has used ceramic and titanium in the pilot's line since the eighties, and bronze in the more recent series. On bronze a dark patina belongs to it and is not damage.
Impact on the value: Large
-
The state of the case and the bezel
The large cases of this brand have broad surfaces and therefore plenty of area on which something shows. On the Portugieser the edge around the crystal is where polishing shows first; so leave the case alone before you sell.
Impact on the value: Average
-
Complication and production run
A perpetual calendar, a seven-day power reserve or a limited anniversary edition all count. If there is a number on the caseback, do mention it; of the 1993 anniversary edition 1750 were made in total.
Impact on the value: Average
-
Box, papers and service receipts
IWC keeps a detailed service history, and a receipt from the brand itself is a plus. Without box or papers we still buy; it only means more working out at our end.
Impact on the value: Average
We name no figures here, because within this brand the lines vary too widely to pin one number to. We make an offer on your own watch.
Request a valuationIWC references we buy often
At IWC the reference is on the warranty card and on the caseback, and consists of four to six digits, on recent watches with IW in front. The first digits give the line: the 37 and 50 series are Portugieser, the 32 and 50 series also pilot's watches, and the 32 and 38 series Ingenieur and Portofino. If you cannot find it, we work it out from the photos.

How to sell your IWC to Reuven Watches
Three steps, and until the last one you are committed to nothing. At this brand, above all photograph the caseback and the edge around the crystal, because that is where the story sits.
Send your details and photos
Photograph the dial straight from above, the caseback with the reference and the case from the side. If you have the warranty card, take a photo of that too; it carries the full reference.
We establish line, reference and movement
Beni Reuben reads the reference, establishes which line and which generation it is and looks at which movement is inside. On the Portugieser Chronograph that matters most. Within 24 hours you will hear what we offer, weekends included.
Come by or send it insured
If the offer suits you, you come by in Utrecht or send your IWC insured. We arrange that shipping and pay for it, from abroad as well. If you turn the offer down, you keep your watch.
What helps when valuing an IWC?
With IWC it comes down to the line and to the movement. These six points usually bring us exactly where we need to be.
-
Photo of the case back
Status: Helpful
That is where the reference sits, and on much of the pilot's line an engraving naming the version as well.
-
A photo of the dial straight from above
Status: Helpful
On the Portugieser the placement of the small seconds and the power reserve says which generation it is.
-
The full reference or the warranty card
Status: Helpful
On recent watches it starts with IW and has six digits. That is more precise than the model name.
-
Photo of the case from the side
Status: Optional
This shows us the edge around the crystal and the transition to the lug, and so whether it has ever been polished.
-
Service receipts from IWC itself
Status: Optional
This brand keeps good service records. A receipt from the brand itself fills in the picture.
-
Spare straps and tool
Status: Optional
Many IWCs were supplied with a second strap, and some models come with a changing tool.
There is no fixed list: send what you can manage. We go through the rest once we are in touch. We buy every brand, with or without box and papers, and there is no minimum value.
Offer your IWC
At IWC the movement follows from the full reference. Two watches identical in a photo can differ inside.
What do we look at first on an IWC?
Four things that decide most about what a watch fetches at this brand, and that you can check yourself before offering it.
The Portugieser and the Portuguese are the same watch
In the Netherlands and Germany the model is called the Portugieser, and in the English-speaking market it was sold for years as the Portuguese. People search for both and many think they are two models. Write down what appears in your papers; which name you use makes no difference to us.
On the Portugieser Chronograph the difference is in the movement
The 3714 ran from 1998 to 2020 and has a movement based on the Valjoux 7750. The 3716 from 2020 has IWC's own calibre 69355. From the outside they look much alike, and that is exactly why we ask for the full reference rather than the model name.
The soft-iron inner case of the pilot's line
Since the Mark XI of 1948 the pilot's watches and the Ingenieur have had a soft-iron inner case around the movement, against magnetic fields. That also means the caseback is solid: if you see a window onto the movement on a pilot's watch, that is a reason to look more closely.
The Ingenieur comes from the same designer as the Royal Oak
Gérald Genta drew the Ingenieur SL in 1976, and he is the same man behind the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak and the Patek Philippe Nautilus. In 2023 IWC based the line on that design again. On the examples from the seventies we look especially at the integrated bracelet, because it cannot be bought separately.
If you are unsure about any of these points, simply show us. We ask for whatever we need and you do not have to work anything out in advance.
Have your IWC assessedSell your IWC to us or advertise it yourself?
IWC has many variants per line, and that makes selling it yourself laborious: a buyer wants to know which reference it is, which movement is inside and whether the case is still unspoilt.
| Reuven Watches | Advertising it yourself | Trading in at a dealer | |
|---|---|---|---|
| How soon you know where you stand | An offer within 24 hours | For as long as your advert has to run | Immediately, if you buy something back |
| Working out which movement is inside | We do that from the reference | You, with every viewer again | The dealer decides |
| A watch that needs a service | No obstacle; we assess the whole watch | This is what buyers press hardest on | Pushes the trade-in value down |
| What it costs you | Nothing; the shipping is on us too | Advertising costs and your own time | You are tied to a purchase |
| Risk in transit | We ship insured and arrange it all | You arrange and carry it yourself | Not applicable |
| When the offer becomes final | Only once you agree | Only once there is a buyer | At the trade-in |
Selling it yourself can bring in more, and we say so honestly. At this brand it only requires that you can back up the reference and the movement.

Questions about selling an IWC
Is a Portugieser the same as a Portuguese?
Yes, exactly the same watch. Portugieser is the name IWC uses in the Netherlands and Germany; in the English-speaking market the model was sold for years as the Portuguese.
People search for both, and that causes confusion. Simply write down what appears in your papers.
What is the difference between a 3714 and a 3716?
The movement. The Portugieser Chronograph 3714 ran from 1998 to 2020 and has a movement based on the Valjoux 7750. The 3716 from 2020 has IWC's own calibre 69355.
From the outside they look much alike. So pass on the full reference rather than just the model name, and the offer is immediately more precise.
Where do I find the reference on my IWC?
On the warranty card, and on most models engraved on the caseback as well. On recent watches it starts with IW and has six digits; on older ones it is a four-digit number such as 3714 or 5002.
Take that photo with the light from the side, because straight from above the engraving disappears into the reflection.
My Big Pilot is 46 millimetres. Is that too large to sell?
No. The Big Pilot was deliberately made that way and has its own following for it; the first modern version, from 2002, is 46.2 millimetres.
We simply buy them, in steel, titanium, ceramic and gold, and the later versions in smaller sizes too.
The bronze case on my IWC has gone dark. Is that damage?
No, it belongs to it. Bronze forms a layer that changes the colour, and on these versions that is the intention.
So do not polish it off before you sell. A bronze case buffed back to a shine is of less interest to a buyer, not more.
Do you also buy an older Ingenieur or Mark pilot?
Yes, including the Ingenieur SL from the seventies and the Mark models from before 1990.
On those we look especially at the integrated bracelet and at whether all the parts belong together, because spare parts for these watches are not easily found.
I no longer have the box and papers. Can I still sell it?
Yes. We buy every brand, with or without box and papers, and there is no minimum value.
If you do have a service receipt from IWC itself, send it along. This brand keeps good service records and that fills in the picture.
How soon do I get an offer on my IWC?
Within 24 hours of your request, every day of the week. Weekends included.
Our offer carries no obligation. You decide only once you have seen it.
Assessed by
Beni Reuben
Owner and valuer at Reuven Watches
With an IWC, Beni Reuben asks first for the full reference, because at this brand the difference between two watches that look identical lies in the movement. Then comes the edge around the crystal, because that shows whether the case has ever been polished.

Frequently asked questions
Answers to the questions we get most.
Which IWC model do you want to sell?
We buy every IWC, from a Portugieser from the nineties to a recent Ingenieur. For each line we look at the reference, the movement, the material and the state of the case. Keep the warranty card to hand if you have it, because it carries the full reference.
Sell your IWC Portugieser
The Portugieser dates from 1939 and came about because two Portuguese merchants wanted the accuracy of a marine chronometer in a wristwatch. That puts a large movement in a large case. If you want to sell an IWC Portugieser, we ask first for the full reference, because within this line time and date, power reserve, chronograph and perpetual calendar run side by side.
Sell your IWC Portugieser Chronograph 3714
With a production run from 1998 to 2020, the 3714 is the best-known chronograph of the house: forty point nine millimetres, with a movement based on the Valjoux 7750. To sell a 3714 we check that the chronograph starts, stops and resets to zero cleanly, and that the case edges are still crisp.
Sell your IWC Portuguese
Portuguese is the name under which the Portugieser was sold for years in the English-speaking market. It is the same watch and the same references. So if you are searching to sell an IWC Portuguese, you are on the right page; simply use the name that appears in your papers.
Sell your IWC Big Pilot
The Big Pilot arrived in 2002 as reference 5002, with a case of forty-six point two millimetres and a seven-day power reserve. When selling a Big Pilot we look at the material, at the generation of the movement and at the state of the leather strap, because at this size that is a wear part.
Sell your IWC pilot's watch or Mark series
The pilot's line runs from the Mark XI of 1948 to the recent versions, with sequential numbering and a soft-iron inner case against magnetism. If you want to sell an IWC pilot's watch, the first question is which Mark number it is and whether the caseback is still solid and undamaged.
Sell your IWC Ingenieur
The Ingenieur has existed since 1955 and was redrawn in 1976 by Gérald Genta as the Ingenieur SL, reference 1832. In 2023 the line was based on that design again. To sell an IWC Ingenieur we look at the integrated bracelet and the stretch in the links, because that bracelet cannot be bought separately.
Sell your IWC Portofino or Aquatimer
The Portofino is the slim, classic line of the house and the Aquatimer the dive line. Both come in steel and in gold, and the Aquatimer exists with an inner bezel and with an outer bezel. We buy them, and on the Aquatimer we also assess whether the bezel still turns properly and evenly.
Sell your gold IWC or limited edition
IWC makes versions in yellow, rose and white gold and in platinum, and anniversary series in limited runs. Of the 1993 edition for the 125th anniversary, 1750 were made, divided across steel, rose gold and platinum. If there is a number on the caseback, do mention it with your request.
