Valuation

What sets the value of your Cartier?

Cartier is a jeweller that makes watches, and you notice that in what decides the value. Here the material and the case shape weigh more heavily than the movement, and stone setting can cut both ways. These are the six points we go through first on a Cartier.

  • The material of the case

Steel, steel and gold, yellow gold, rose gold or white gold. At Cartier this is the largest lever there is, larger than at most watch brands. If you are not sure, we read it from the hallmarks on the case and the buckle.

    Impact on the value: Large

  • Stone setting from the factory or added later

Diamonds Cartier set itself belong to the reference and count. Stones added later by a third party do the opposite and depress the value, even when the work is fine. At Cartier this is where value most often disappears.

    Impact on the value: Large

  • Quartz or mechanical

Cartier supplies many models in both. In the market a quartz Tank is a different watch from the same Tank with an automatic movement. If you hear a tick once a second, it is quartz; if the seconds hand sweeps, it is mechanical.

    Impact on the value: Large

  • The case shape and the size

Square, rectangular, tonneau or round, and each shape in small, medium and large. The same Tank in two sizes draws two different buyers. Measure the case across the width, without the crown and without the strap.

    Impact on the value: Average

  • The original strap or bracelet

An integrated bracelet belongs to the case and is hard to replace separately. A leather strap with the original buckle counts; a generic strap does not. If you still have the original strap lying about, send it along.

    Impact on the value: Average

  • Box, certificate and service history

Cartier supplies a certificate with a new watch and service papers after maintenance. Those make the version and the year easier to trace. Without papers we still buy; it only means more working out.

    Impact on the value: Average

We deliberately name no figures and no guide prices on this page. At Cartier two watches of the same model diverge widely as soon as the material or the stone setting differs.

Reference numbers

Cartier references we buy often

Cartier has reorganised its numbering several times: first short four-digit numbers, then codes beginning with a W, and for some years now codes such as WSSA or WSTA. The number is on the caseback, usually together with the serial number. If you do not know it, send a photo of the caseback.

Reference Model Period Feature
2740 Santos 100 XL circa 2004 to 2016 large square case, screws on the bezel
W20073X8 Santos Galbée XL nineties and 2000s steel and gold, curved case flanks
WSSA0018 Santos de Cartier Large Model from 2018 QuickSwitch strap and adjustable SmartLink links
W6920046 Ballon Bleu 42 mm from 2007 a round case with the crown in a recess
W51008Q3 Tank Française, medium size nineties and 2000s rectangular case, integrated bracelet
WSTA0041 Tank Must Large Model from 2021 steel, quartz, leather strap
W62002V3 Roadster Large Model circa 2002 to 2013 tonneau case, curved dial
Four-digit numbers Vintage Tank and Santos eighties and nineties short numbers on the caseback, usually with a serial number

From request to handover

How to sell your Cartier to Reuven Watches

Three steps, and until the last one you are committed to nothing. If you say straight away which material it is and whether there are stones on it, the offer can be sharper.

  1. The Reuven Watches request form on a phone, the first step to selling your watch

    Send your details and photos

Photograph the dial straight from above, the caseback with the number, and the side of the case where the hallmarks are. If there are stones on it, take a separate photo of those.

  2. A valuer assessing a Rolex Submariner wearing gloves and using tools for a no-obligation offer

We establish the material, version and setting

Beni Reuben reads the hallmarks, establishes whether the movement is quartz or mechanical and assesses whether the stone setting came from the factory. Within 24 hours you will hear what we offer, weekends included.

  3. A luxury watch in a gloved hand beside a Reuven Watches box, specialist in buying and selling luxury watches

Come by or send it insured

If the offer suits you, you come by in Utrecht or send your Cartier insured. We arrange that shipping and pay for it. If you turn the offer down, you keep your watch.

Preparation

What helps when valuing a Cartier?

At Cartier the information sits on the caseback and on the flanks of the case. Two good photos of those usually bring us where we need to be.

  • Photo of the case back

    Status: Helpful

That carries the reference number and the serial number. On a gold Cartier the caseback or the case side also carries the hallmark.

  • Photo of the dial

    Status: Helpful

Straight from above and in daylight. The Roman numerals and the blued hands must be sharp in the photo.

  • The width of the case

    Status: Helpful

Measure across the width, without the crown and without the strap. At Cartier small, medium and large are three different watches.

  • Quartz or mechanical

    Status: Helpful

If the seconds hand ticks once a second, it is quartz. If it sweeps on, it is mechanical. If there is no seconds hand, we work it out.

  • The original bracelet or links

    Status: Optional

Loose links that were once removed count too. On an integrated bracelet those are hard to source afterwards.

  • A certificate or service papers

    Status: Optional

The certificate names the version as the watch left the shop. That saves argument about setting added later.

There is no fixed list: send what you can manage. We go through the rest once we are in touch. We buy every brand, with or without box and papers, and there is no minimum value.

On a Cartier the origin of the stones decides whether they count. Setting by the house is something other than setting added later.

Expertise

What do we look at first on a Cartier?

Four things that decide most about what a watch fetches at this brand, and that you can check yourself before offering it.

  • The hidden signature on the dial

Cartier works its name into one of the Roman numerals as fine lettering, usually in the seven or the ten. You only see it with a loupe or in a strongly enlarged photo. We look at that, together with the letterforms of the numerals and the trace of the printing, because those are the places where a non-original dial gives itself away.

  • The stone in the crown

On almost every Cartier model a faceted stone sits in the crown: on steel versions usually a synthetic spinel, on gold ones more often a sapphire. The cut, the colour and how tightly it sits in the crown belong to the version and the year. A replaced crown shows here soonest.

  • Hallmarks and material

On a gold Cartier there are hallmarks on the case and usually on the buckle as well. They give the fineness and sometimes the country of assay. On steel and gold the gold is only on the bezel and the links, and then it matters that case and bracelet belong together. We read those marks with a loupe.

  • Stone setting added later

Diamonds set afterwards can be recognised by the finish around the setting, by signs of work on the case and by a pattern differing from what Cartier supplied for that reference. We always say what we see and why it affects the offer, even when the work is neat.

If you are unsure about any of these points, simply show us. We ask for whatever we need and you do not have to work anything out in advance.

Have your Cartier assessed
Your options side by side

Sell your Cartier to us or take it to a jeweller?

For many people a Cartier is also a piece of jewellery, which makes the route to the jeweller a logical one. The difference lies in what is weighed there: the gold, or the watch as a whole.

Reuven Watches Gold buyer or jeweller Selling online yourself
What gets looked atThe watch as a whole, brand and version Often mainly at the weight of the gold Whatever the buyer happens to want
Does factory setting countYes, we assess it separately Usually not, or barely You have to be able to prove it yourself
A quartz CartierSimply welcome Usually of interest only for the material Needs explaining to every buyer
How soon you know where you standAn offer within 24 hours On the spot, with nothing to back it up For as long as it takes a buyer to appear
What it costs youNothing; the shipping is on us too Your journey here Advertising costs and your own time
When the offer becomes finalOnly once you agree At the counter Only once there is a buyer

We are not saying a jeweller or a marketplace is a bad idea. We are saying that with Cartier it matters whether someone looks at the brand or at the weight.

Frequently asked questions

Questions about selling a Cartier

Do you also buy a Cartier with a quartz movement?

Yes. Cartier supplies many models in both quartz and mechanical, and we buy both.

It is worth mentioning, though, because in the market they are two different watches and that carries through into the offer.

There are diamonds on my Cartier. Does that count?

That depends on where they came from. Setting Cartier applied itself belongs to the reference and simply counts.

If the stones were set later by somebody else, that works the other way round, even when the work is neat. We always say what we see and why.

Do you also buy Cartier jewellery such as a Love bracelet?

Do put it to us. Alongside watches, our own stock includes Cartier jewellery.

Send photos of the piece, of the hallmarks and of the serial number, and we will let you know what is possible.

Where is the reference number on my Cartier?

On the caseback, usually together with the serial number. On older models it is a short four-digit number, on newer ones a code beginning with a W.

If you cannot read it, send a sharp photo of the caseback and we will.

My Cartier has been polished. Does that matter?

It does not matter in itself, but it is something we look at. On the Santos and the Tank brushed and polished surfaces sit side by side, and an overall polish takes that difference away.

That is irreversible, so it belongs in the assessment.

Do you also buy older Cartiers from the eighties and nineties?

Yes, including the vintage Tank, the Santos Galbée, the Panthère and the Must line from those years.

On those we look especially at the dial and at whether case, strap and buckle belong together.

How soon do I get an offer on my Cartier?

Within 24 hours of your request, every day of the week. Weekends included.

You are not tied to the offer. You decide only once you have seen it.

By model

Which Cartier model do you want to sell?

We buy every Cartier, from a Santos to a vintage Tank. For each model we look at the material, the case size, the movement and the setting. Do say whether the watch is quartz or mechanical, because at this brand that separates two markets.

Sell your Cartier Santos

The Santos is the model Cartier is recognised by fastest. If you want to sell a Cartier Santos, the generation decides the most: a Santos Galbée from the nineties, a Santos 100 from the start of this century and the Santos de Cartier from 2018 are three different watches. The last of those has a strap you change without tools.

Sell your Cartier Tank

The Tank covers several watches with markets of their own. To sell a Tank Louis Cartier, a Tank Française, a Tank Américaine, a Tank Must or a Tank Solo we look at the case size, the material and whether the movement is quartz or mechanical. A gold Tank Louis and a steel Tank Must sit far apart.

Sell your Cartier Ballon Bleu

The Ballon Bleu is recognisable by the crown sitting in a recess of the case. The model runs from small ladies' sizes to 42 millimetres and from steel to solid gold. When selling a Cartier Ballon Bleu the size, the material and the type of movement weigh heaviest.

Sell your Cartier Panthère

The Panthère disappeared and later returned, which makes the supply mixed: examples from the eighties and nineties alongside recent ones. If you want to sell a Cartier Panthère, we look at the state of the fine bracelet, because that is the part that suffers most.

Sell your Cartier Pasha

You recognise the Pasha by the screw-down crown attached to the case by a small chain. The model appeared in various sizes and materials and was later reissued. For a Cartier Pasha we look at the size, the crown cover and whether the chain is still complete.

Sell your Cartier Roadster

The Roadster ran for about ten years and has a tonneau case with a curved dial. We buy both the standard and the chronograph version. When selling a Cartier Roadster we look above all at the case flanks, because the shape shows polishing quickly.

Sell your Cartier Baignoire, Tortue or Crash

The house's shaped watches sit in a market of their own. The oval Baignoire, the tortoise-shaped Tortue and the distorted Crash design are rarer than the standard lines. If you have one, do show it to us, papers or no papers.

Sell your vintage Cartier or Must

We also buy the Must line from the eighties, in vermeil rather than solid gold. On vintage Cartier we look at the dial, at the hallmarks and at whether case, strap and buckle belong together. If you do not know the model, send a photo of the dial and of the caseback.
