What should you watch for on a pre-owned luxury watch?

Four things decide whether a pre-owned watch is worth its money: does the watch match the reference it is sold under, is the case still crisp or already buffed away, does the movement run as it should, and who stands behind the sale if something is wrong with it. The first three you can see on the watch or have shown to you. The fourth you only see when something goes wrong, and that is exactly why it matters most.

The market for pre-owned luxury watches has grown considerably in recent years, and that has a downside. A large part of what is listed online is sold by parties that have never held the watch: a listing passed on, photos taken from the previous owner, shipping straight from A to C. When it goes well you notice nothing. When something goes wrong, you have a seller who does not know what he sold.

We work the other way round. We buy ourselves, from private owners and from dealers, and only after the watch has lain on this counter does it go on sale. That means the stock is smaller than at a trading platform, but also that we can answer any question about any watch without having to go and ask.

What you find on every product page: the reference, the year as far as it can be established, the case diameter, what is present in the way of box and papers, and an honest description of the condition. If there is a scratch, it says so and you see it in the photo. It does us no good to sell you a watch you come back on within a fortnight.

Before it goes on sale

Four things we check before a watch goes on sale

This is about condition, not authenticity. That a watch is what it claims to be is our baseline and not a selling point; a watch we cannot make sense of we simply do not buy. What follows is what remains to be seen on a watch after that, and what of it belongs in the description.

  • Whether the case still has its original shape

A luxury watch case consists of brushed surfaces with edges between them that ought to be crisp. On a watch that has been buffed a few times those edges go round and the surfaces lose their line. That cannot be undone and it costs value. We look at how crisp the corners are, at the thickness of the lugs and at whether the brand logo on the clasp is still complete.

  • Whether the parts belong together and to the reference

Dial, hands, bezel, crown and bracelet belong to the reference number on the watch. Over twenty years of servicing, something among them has often been replaced, and not always with an original part. We set the combination against what the manufacturer supplied for that reference and put any deviation in the description.

  • Whether the movement runs as it should

A watch that looks good can still gain four minutes a day. We check the rate, the power reserve and whether the functions do what they should: a date that turns over at midnight, a chronograph that resets to zero, a crown that engages in every position. Whatever is not right there, we have put right before the watch goes on sale.

  • What actually comes with it

On the pre-owned market box and papers make a considerable difference to the price, so adverts often write around it. We simply state it: is there a warranty document and does it carry a date, is the box the original for this model, are extra links included and is the service history known. If something is missing, it says so and it is reflected in the price.

If something in a photo leaves you unsure, just ask. We would rather take another shot or explain something again than have you buy a watch you later regret.

Why here

Buying from a shop rather than from an advert

Reuven Watches has existed since 2019 and sits on the Amsterdamsestraatweg in Utrecht. We are a shop with a counter, not a collection point for listings. You notice that in the size of the stock, which is smaller than a platform's, and in everything else: you can come by, put the watch on and ask questions of the person who bought it.

  • Every watch bought and checked by us
  • Photos of the watch you get, not of the model
  • Come by and try it on before you decide
  • A year's guarantee on the movement
  • Fourteen days to change your mind, no reason needed

With every purchase

What do you always get with it?

These three apply to every watch you buy from us, whatever the brand or the amount.

  • A year's guarantee on the movement

If anything goes wrong with the running movement within a year, we put it right. Damage from drops, water or your own interventions falls outside it, as does wear to the strap.

    The terms
  • Fourteen days to change your mind

If the watch does not suit you, send it back within fourteen days and you get your money back. You do not have to give a reason. The watch does have to come back in the same condition.

    How returns work
  • Sent insured, or collected in person

We ship insured and by registered post within the Netherlands and Belgium, or you collect the watch at the shop in Utrecht and check it there before you pay.

Good to know

Buying a pre-owned luxury watch, from start to finish

Anyone buying a pre-owned watch of any value for the first time runs into the same questions. Here they are, with the answer as we give it at the counter.

Buying pre-owned or new

At most Swiss brands a new example from the official dealer means months or years of waiting, and on the popular sports models a new customer often does not get a look in at all. On the pre-owned market the watch is there at once. Against that, you have to assess the condition yourself or have it assessed, and the price of a sought-after model can sit above the retail price.

For the models that are not scarce the reverse applies: a watch a few years old is often considerably cheaper than new, while being technically the same watch.

What a reference number tells you

Every model has a reference: a combination of digits that fixes the exact version. Case material, bezel, dial and bracelet type are all encoded in it. Two watches that look identical in a photo can carry different references and differ by thousands of euros in value.

We put the reference on every product page and check that the watch matches what that reference should be. If something deviates, for instance a dial replaced later, it is in the description.

Box and papers: how much difference do they make

On a sought-after model a complete set with the original box and warranty document can account for ten to twenty per cent of the price. On a classic watch of thirty years old it is often barely to be found any more and counts for less.

Papers are not proof of authenticity: they belong to the watch, but they do not travel with it automatically and can be bought separately. So we assess the watch itself, and use the papers only to confirm what we have already established.

Service history, and when a service is due

A mechanical watch needs a service every five to ten years: cleaning, fresh lubrication, regulation. At most brands that costs a few hundred to well over a thousand euros, depending on the movement.

From a recently serviced watch you may expect years of use ahead. If the last service was long ago or is unknown, reckon with that cost coming. We put in the description what we know and invent nothing where the history is missing.

Why prices differ between sellers

The same reference can sit thousands of euros apart at two sellers. That is rarely down to the watch and usually to everything else: the state of the case, what is included, whether the seller has checked the watch, and what guarantee and right of return you get.

A price strikingly below the market is almost always a price without those assurances. So compare not only the amount but also what you get back if something turns out to be wrong.

Buying remotely or coming by

You can order here online and have it delivered insured, with fourteen days to change your mind. For a watch of any value we would still advise coming by if you can. How a watch sits on the wrist, how heavy it is and how the case diameter works out on your wrist size cannot be seen in a photo.

We are at Amsterdamsestraatweg 251 in Utrecht. On Wednesday and Thursday from 12:00 to 17:00 you can walk in without an appointment; on the other days we arrange a time.

Trading in your current watch

Because we buy ourselves, you can trade a watch against another from stock. We value what you have and offset it against the purchase. That saves you the time and bother of selling it yourself, and the watch stays within the same shop.

If you only want to sell and buy nothing back, that is fine too. We buy every brand, with or without box and papers.

What keeps a watch its value

A watch is not an investment and we do not present it as one. What is true: at the well-known Swiss brands, a well-maintained example in a current version holds its value better than at brands with a thin pre-owned market.

What helps is predictable: a common model, a case that has not been buffed away, original parts and a known service history. Exactly the points we look at when buying.

Frequently asked questions

Questions about buying a watch from us

Have these watches been checked by you?

Yes. Everything here was bought and assessed by us before it went on sale. We have held the watch, checked the reference, recorded the condition and run the movement. We do not pass on other parties' listings.

What guarantee do I get on a pre-owned watch?

A year's guarantee on the movement. If anything goes wrong with the running movement in that year, we put it right. Outside it fall damage from drops or water, wear to the strap and work done by others. Beyond that you simply have your statutory rights as a consumer.

Can I come and see the watch first?

We would welcome it. We are at Amsterdamsestraatweg 251 in Utrecht. On Wednesday and Thursday from 12:00 to 17:00 you can walk in without an appointment; on other days we arrange a time. You can put the watch on and ask any question you have.

And if I do not like it after all?

Then you send it back within fourteen days and get your money back. You do not have to give a reason. The watch does have to come back in the same condition as you received it.

Why is the stock relatively small?

Because we buy everything ourselves. What is here we have paid for and assessed, and that limits how much can be listed at once. A trading platform shows thousands of third-party watches; we show what we have in the building. If you are looking for something not listed right now, tell us and we will keep it in mind.

Do box and papers always come with it?

No, and each product page says so. On older watches the set has often gone missing over the years. What is and is not included is reflected in the price, so you do not pay for something that is not there.

Can I trade in my own watch against a purchase?

Yes. We value your watch and offset that amount against the purchase. Because we buy ourselves, that can be done straight away, without your having to find a buyer first. Bring the watch along or send us a few photos in advance.

How do payment and shipping work?

You can pay online with the order or in the shop on collection. We ship insured and by registered post within the Netherlands and Belgium, with a signature on receipt. If you collect the watch, you check it there before you pay.
