This Cartier Love Bracelet is in rose gold and comes in the original red Cartier box with certificate and screwdriver.

The design

The Love Bracelet was designed in 1969 by Aldo Cipullo for Cartier in New York. The idea was a piece of jewellery you could not simply take off: the bracelet closes with two screws and only opens with a screwdriver, which comes with it as standard. Cipullo was referring to the medieval chastity belt, but as a promise of love rather than as constraint. In the nineteen-seventies the bracelet was sold in New York only to couples, with one fastening it on the other.

Rose gold

In rose gold the bracelet has a warmer tone than the classic yellow gold version and stands out less against the skin. The oval shape and the screw heads on the outside have been unchanged since 1969; it is one of the few pieces of jewellery you recognise by a single detail, without a brand name on it.

About the size

Cartier sizes the Love Bracelet to match wrist circumference in centimetres. The bracelet should sit with half a centimetre to a centimetre of play: it then moves over the wrist but does not slide over the hand. Come and try it on, then you know for certain.

Questions and answers

Questions about this item

Can I put the Love Bracelet on and take it off myself?

Yes, with the screwdriver supplied. The bracelet closes with two screws at the side. In practice it is easier to have someone help, because one hand alone struggles to keep enough pressure on the screw.

How do I know which size I need?

Cartier sizes the Love Bracelet to match wrist circumference in centimetres. The bracelet should sit with half to one centimetre of play, so that it moves over the wrist but does not slip over the hand. Measure your wrist, or come by to try it on.

Does the screw head wear out if I take the bracelet off often?

The screws are made to be used regularly, but the tool has to fit the slot properly. Always use the screwdriver supplied rather than an ordinary one; the wrong tool damages the head, and that damage shows.

Can I wear the Love Bracelet day and night?

That is what it was made for: it only comes off with a tool. Rose gold is softer than steel, so fine marks appear after years of wear. Many owners see those as part of the piece.

What is the difference between the classic and the small model?

The classic Love Bracelet is about six millimetres wide, the small model about four. The small one is subtler and stacks more easily with other jewellery; the classic is the model that has remained unchanged since 1969.

Can the bracelet be polished?

It can, but every polish removes material and rounds off the edges of the screw heads. On a piece that is worn daily it is usually better to leave the marks of wear alone.
